After being urged to apply by both parents and teachers within the district, Katie was appointed to the Solana Beach School Board in November 2023. In 2024, she was elected to the board. Since then, she has embraced her role, actively seeking to expand her knowledge of the district and enhance her effectiveness as a board member. Katie is a strong advocate for public education at the state and federal levels, engaging legislators on behalf of students and schools.

Like many in our community, Katie and her husband moved to the area 13 years ago for the excellent schools. They have two energetic and creative children. Both children attended schools in the Solana Beach School District (SBSD) and her son just promoted out of the district. Both children are active in the community, participating in music, basketball, and soccer.

During the pandemic, Katie answered SBSD's plea for substitute teachers. Her experience in various roles within the schools, including classroom teacher and special education assistant, provides her with a unique perspective as a board member. With firsthand classroom experience, she provides valuable insight into students' academic and social-emotional needs.

Katie has volunteered in numerous capacities within her children's schools, including:

As a Trustee in the Solana Beach School District, one of Katie's most rewarding experiences is immersing herself in our schools. She regularly visits classrooms and participates in school and community events to stay connected with students, parents, and educators. This helps her advocate effectively for them while also providing her with ample opportunities to respond to their questions and comments.

Dr. Süel earned her PhD in molecular biophysics. She's published in notable journals, such as Cell and Nature, and has secured funding from the NIH. Although she has transitioned from active research, Dr. Süel’s scientific background is evident in her support for SBSD’s STREAM Labs. She is passionate about engaging children in scientific pursuits from a young age.
